The Objective
* To extend the church's ability to meet the needs of the local community by
establishing, for example, a social gathering for senior citizens, a meeting point for parents and toddlers, children's after school clubs.
* To provide a meeting room for external bookings by local clubs and societies, and for
modest social functions such as a family baptism party or post-funeral refreshments.
* To provide meeting room facilities for the church's own requirements, including
children's and young people's activities on Sundays and weekdays; and office space.
The Building Work
We have embarked upon an imaginatively designed extension, in keeping with the
existing building, and with appropriate access and facilities for the disabled.
The building work currently in progress includes:
* Demolition of an unsightly and crumbling toilet and kitchen extension.
* Refurbishment of our existing vestry to provide new lobby, kitchen and toilet
facilities.
* Building a new meeting room in the south west corner of the churchyard.
* Building a new vestry and parish office in an upper room above the existing vestry.
The Cost
The total cost of the project is approximately £175,000. So far, we have managed to
raise around £110,000.
Can you help?
If you would like to support our project, we would be extremely grateful.
You can send a donation to our Appeal Treasurer,
Mr Jack Taylor, 3 Stone Close, Spondon, Derby DE21 7ER,
or e-mail us via the vicar at rjandrews@ukonline.co.uk

THE PARISH ROOM PROJECT

The Curate writes:
It is always reassuring to discover that others suffer from the need-to-know as much as I do! Many people
have asked about the parish to which I am
moving at the beginning of September, so I take this opportunity to let you know a little about it.
The parish is called All Saints', Emscote and is in Warwick in the Diocese of Coventry. It is part of the
New Warwick Team Ministry so I will be working with four other colleagues on common issues of concern, but we will retain a very large amount of control over the individual churches to which we are licensed. Within the Team I will have a particular responsibility for schools and youth work.
The church building is itself only 12 years old. I think it is modern architecture at its best. The main
church is very big and tall and speaks powerfully of the greatness of God, while the Lady Chapel is very small and intimate and beautifully lit with stained glass and a votive candle stand. There is a large Parish Office where the parish administrator works for 20 hours a week as well as a large meeting room and kitchen, and also two vestries and a youth/children's room. Behind the church is a large parish hall, which is currently being redeveloped which is well used by the local community throughout the week. As well as the parish administrator there is a full time youth worker attached to the parish.
The pattern of worship there is very similar to that at St. Werburgh's. A small group says the Daily Office
each day and there is a daily Mass. Sunday attendance is lower than here, though the catchment area is correspondingly smaller.
Emscote itself is a suburb of Warwick, between Warwick and Leamington Spa. Socially it is not
dissimilar to Spondon. It is a very settled mixed community with a village feel to it. The Grand Union Canal runs through the parish (past the end of the vicarage garden to be precise!) and there is an infant, a junior and a special school all within the parish bounds.
The house is a 1960s vicarage that is in good condition with a large garden (which Edward is already
calling 'the field'!). The house is in need of some decoration so our lives at the moment are full of paint charts and interior design magazines!
We have received a very warm welcome from those people that we have already met. But that is not to
say that we are going to find leaving Spondon easy.
My time here as curate, and our time here as a family, has been very special to us and we have taken this
community very much to heart. To pull up roots is going to be painful and difficult. Yet part of the priestly life is about obeying God's call and that has its costs as well as it joys.
Do please remember us in your prayers as we prepare to move and if possible join us at the 10am Parish
Eucharist on Sunday 8th September as we give thanks for our time here and ask God's blessing on the future.
John.

Sadly, the time has come for us in the parish of Spondon and in particular at St.
Werburgh's, to say goodbye to our curate John Fitzmaurice and his family.
I'm sure you will all be missed by the whole community and our prayers go with
you John, Caroline, Sarah and Edward. God bless you all. |
